DOs and DON’Ts for points and miles
The safe order is simple: set a goal, check the balance and repayment, count ongoing costs, then consider an offer. Use the two checklists below before collecting or moving any points.
The checklist
DO
Choose a route, date range and cabin before building a balance. Compare the award with the cash fare, including taxes, surcharges, positioning flights and cancellation terms.
Confirm the repayment setting before the first purchase. Some cards open with partial repayment; interest can exceed years of ordinary points earning.
Use the card comparison to assess regular fees, foreign-use costs and benefits you would actually buy. Protecting an expiring balance can justify a fee; vague future travel cannot.
Transfer only after finding bookable availability and checking the current ratio, transfer time, minimum and destination-program rules. Transfers are normally irreversible.
Keep a short list of account balances, expiry rules, annual-fee dates, credit periods and benefit registrations. Recheck it before each renewal.
Use the verified offers collection for time-sensitive claims. Entries are published only after the source and freshness checks pass.
If the plan starts with a bonus instead of a realistic trip and full repayment, start again.
