Miles & More: programme and cards overview

Miles & More is a major programme for people based in Germany. This guide covers the stable decisions: how to earn or protect a balance, how to compare a card, and what to check before spending miles. Current card terms, welcome offers and award prices require a fresh review before you act.

Lufthansa Group awards use dynamic pricing. Check the mileage price, taxes, surcharges, availability and refund rules for the exact flight before you transfer points or make a card decision.

Earn and protect miles

Use a card only when the normal costs make sense

Miles & More cards can earn award miles on eligible spending and may protect miles from expiry while the relevant card conditions are met. Compare the regular fee, repayment method, earning rate, acceptance, foreign-use costs and protection terms. The right comparison always includes having no new card.

Treat welcome offers as temporary information

An advertised bonus is not part of the long-term card calculation. Consider it only after checking the current official offer, its eligibility rules, deadline, minimum spend, exclusions and whether your planned spending reaches it without changing your behaviour.

Use PAYBACK deliberately

PAYBACK can be an indirect route to Miles & More. Collect points from normal shopping, then check the current transfer terms, minimum, timing and any campaign conditions before transferring. Historical campaigns are not evidence that a new bonus will arrive.

A supplementary or partner card can be useful when it fits your household’s normal spending and the current product terms. It is not a substitute for checking each cardholder’s repayment and eligibility conditions.

Important prerequisites

Repay in full and on time

Interest and late charges can outweigh ordinary miles earnings quickly. Confirm the repayment setting before your first purchase and do not use a rewards card to finance a balance.

Consider credit and application effects

Card approval is individual and can involve a credit check. Apply only for a card you can use under its terms and repay in full; repeated applications are not a beginner strategy.

Main card choices

Private cards

Compare the lower ongoing cost of a Blue Card with the fee and bundled benefits of a Gold Card. Check the current conditions for mileage-expiry protection rather than assuming that it applies to every product or account.
