Understand points and miles programs
Programs are not interchangeable accounts. Each has its own rules for earning, transfers, expiry, availability and redemption. Before collecting or transferring points, identify their currency and which paths remain open afterwards.
Direct miles or flexible points?
- Direct program miles post straight to an airline or frequent-flyer program. This can be simple, but it binds you to that program’s rules and availability.
- Flexible points may transfer to several partners, depending on the system. More options remain open before transfer; the destination program’s rules apply afterwards.
- Retail and partner points can provide another transfer path. Check minimum amounts, deadlines and the current ratio before every conversion.
Keep a simple inventory with the program, balance, possible expiry and intended use. This reveals small scattered balances before you direct more points into an unsuitable system.
